Vermiculture

When small organisms are raised in a controlled environment, they are said to be cultured; the culture of earthworms is known as VERMICULTURE. Full Circle Compost is proud to be a full service worm farm where we raise, employ, and sell COMPOSTING WORMS and several of their by-products.

At Full Circle Compost, our earthworms and microorganisms are our LIVESTOCK!!

Scientists have identified and named roughly 4400 species of earthworms. Generally speaking, earthworms fall into two separate categories: composters and earthworkers. Earthworkers, including nightcrawlers and garden earthworms, are soil-dwelling burrowers that move from one layer of soil to another, mixing the layers as they go. While these soil-dwelling worms play an important role in soil fertility, they do not typically consume large quantities of organic matter, are slow to reproduce and do not survive well in confinement. Composters (also known as redworms, red wigglers, horizontal worms, manure worms, or tiger worms), on the other hand, are not soil-dwelling. Instead, redworms live and work on the surface, surviving only in shallow layers of extremely rich organic matter. They process large amounts of organic matter, reproduce very quickly, and tolerate a wide range of temperatures, acidity, and moisture conditions.

Redworms work best and are happiest at ambient temperatures between 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit and at moisture levels between 70-80%. These conditions, as opposed to thermal composting conditions of 40-50% moisture and temperatures up to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, dramatically increase the diversity of active microbes present such as Protozoa, Rotifera, Actinomycetes, and a host of other fungi and bacteria, all essential to the survival and production of the redworms.

Full Circle Compost is proud to be actively involved in the art and science of VERMICULTURE. Using redworms and microorganisms to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich humus is known as vermicomposting and the benefits of using high-quality vermicompost and compost tea in soil fertility are numerous.

Here at Full Circle Compost, we produce EXTRACTION QUALITY VERMICOMPOST, COMPOST TEA, and COMPOSTING WORMS for use in the production of our humus products as well as for direct retail sales. We also carry the CAN-O-WORMS worm farm.
